Casa Tonalá by Kukun Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Casa Tonalá by Kukun, you immediately get that this isn’t your typical Mexico City hotel. The building sits perfectly on Tonalá street in Roma Norte — honestly, one of the most walkable neighborhoods I’ve experienced in the city. This four-star boutique property has this understated elegance that feels more like staying at a well-designed friend’s place than a commercial hotel. The entrance is subtle, almost easy to miss if you’re not paying attention, which somehow adds to its charm.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s what I love about the location — you’re literally in the heart of Roma Norte’s creative district. I mean, couples rate this spot 9.6 out of 10, and after spending time here, I totally get why. You can walk to Mercado Medellín in about eight minutes (perfect for weekend browsing), and some of the city’s best galleries and cafes are right on your doorstep. The tree-lined streets around Casa Tonalá by Kukun are actually pleasant to stroll, which isn’t something you can say about every Mexico City neighborhood. Plus, you’re close enough to Condesa that a quick walk or short Uber ride gets you there easily.
The Rooms
The rooms strike this nice balance between modern comfort and local character. What caught my attention was how they’ve managed to keep things minimal without feeling sterile — there’s artwork from local artists, and the bathrooms are surprisingly spacious for a boutique property. The beds are genuinely comfortable (I’m picky about this), and the windows actually open, which is refreshing when you want some of that Mexico City energy flowing in. You know what’s nice? The rooms feel quiet despite being on a fairly busy street.
Design & Atmosphere
Casa Tonalá by Kukun has this contemporary Mexican aesthetic that doesn’t try too hard. The common areas blend clean lines with warm materials — lots of wood and stone that feels authentic rather than forced. There’s a rooftop space that’s perfect for evening drinks, and honestly, the views over Roma Norte’s low-rise buildings toward the city center are pretty spectacular at sunset. The whole place has this calm, creative vibe that matches the neighborhood perfectly. It’s the kind of hotel where you might actually want to hang out in the lobby with a book.
Why Guests Love It
Recent guests consistently rate the location at 9.5 out of 10, and after staying here, that makes complete sense. You’re getting boutique hotel quality in one of Mexico City’s most desirable neighborhoods, but without the pretension you might expect. The staff genuinely knows the area — they’ll point you toward the best tacos al pastor nearby (trust me on this) or help you navigate the local art scene. It’s that sweet spot where you feel like you’re experiencing the real Mexico City while still having a comfortable, well-designed place to retreat to at the end of the day.
To book a hotel in Mexico during mariachi festivals, visitors plan early to blend rooftop fiestas with sunrise hot-air balloons over valleys.

Great location, the apartment is very cozy and very clean, the distribution of the two bedroom was perfect , each is separated and are private. All amenities were included in the kitchen and the security and apartment complex staff was great.

Great location!!
What could be improved: It was fine but needs maintenance (much better towels, sheets, paint, etc)Kimberly from United States – 3 April 2024 (8/10)
Kitchen was great though we didn't use it. The rooms are nice and it's quiet on the street. The windows are great and I like they have multi-sets of binds.
What could be improved: The water/sewage has a potent smell from the bathroom even with the door closed but I know that has more to do with the City of Mexico's water quality and rather than the place itself.Jason from United States – 16 February 2024 (7/10)
Nice room. Had an outdoor area, but the chairs outside were not comfortable. Otherwise, all the kitchen stuff was awesome.
What could be improved: Paper thin walls. I could hear the TV from the room adjacent to mine; and if the person spoke, I could also hear the noise.Erica from Canada – 29 January 2024 (7/10)
The location was excellent, and it was very clean. The bathroom and shower were spacious and the backyard area was nice.
What could be improved: It's quite loud. The security staff play games and watch tv on their phones at full volume. You can also hear the doorbell go off whenever anyone needs to enter the building, and this definitely happened a few times at 3am or so. The TV doesn't work and the kettle in the kitchen doesn't work. The room is smaller than expected and the end of the bed is too close to the wall. The person who sleeps on the right side has to walk around through the living area to get to the bathroom.Jaime from Mexico – 6 December 2023 (7/10)
Location is good. Bed was comfy.
What could be improved: After booking they ask you to create an account on their website (including a password, etc) to upload photos of your ID. They also shorten the stated check in times.
