Colmena Tonala Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Colmena Tonala, you immediately get the sense that this isn’t your typical tourist hotel — and honestly, that’s exactly what makes it special. This three-star boutique spot sits right in the heart of Mexico City, and I mean right in the thick of things. The building itself has this understated charm that doesn’t scream for attention, but once you’re inside, you realize the owners put their energy into the details that actually matter.
Location & Neighborhood
You know what really struck me about this place? The location is absolutely unbeatable — recent guests rated it 9.0, and after spending time here, I totally get why. You’re on Tonalá street, which puts you walking distance from Roma Norte’s best cafes, galleries, and that amazing weekend market that locals actually go to (not just tourists). I found myself just wandering the tree-lined streets, discovering little mezcal bars and vintage shops that you’d never find if you were staying in the hotel zone. Couples especially seem to love exploring this area together — they’ve rated the location 8.9 for romantic getaways, and I can see why with all those intimate rooftop bars nearby.
The Room Experience
My room was compact but thoughtfully designed — actually, calling it compact makes it sound cramped, which it definitely wasn’t. The space felt intentional, like every square foot had a purpose. The bed was surprisingly comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses), and the bathroom had this modern, clean aesthetic that felt fresh without being sterile. What I really appreciated was the attention to lighting — there were enough options that I could actually read comfortably in the evening, which is rarer than you’d think in boutique hotels.
Daily Life at the Hotel
The staff here operates more like helpful neighbors than formal hotel employees, which creates this relaxed atmosphere throughout the day. They’re genuinely knowledgeable about the neighborhood and will point you toward places that aren’t in guidebooks. The common areas have this lived-in feel — not messy, just comfortable enough that you don’t feel like you’re disturbing a museum display when you sit down. I spent quite a bit of time in the lobby area just planning my days, and it never felt awkward or rushed.
Why Guests Love It
Here’s the thing about Colmena Tonala — it delivers exactly what it promises without trying to be something it’s not. You’re not getting five-star amenities, but you are getting a genuine Mexico City experience in one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods. The 8.0 overall rating makes perfect sense because this place succeeds at being an excellent mid-range option that punches above its weight in terms of location and character. If you want to feel like you’re actually staying in Mexico City rather than just visiting it, this is your spot.
Hotel in Mexico bookings spike during Formula 1 race week, so fans lock in suites overlooking Reforma’s parade route.

It's very comfy place, not noisy, you feel safe and like at home. Stuff friendly, people are nice. Everything is very comfortable for short or longer term of staying.

The staff, location and very clean
What could be improved: No AC, mosquitos in the roomAry from United Kingdom – 2 March 2025 (9/10)
Position, people, very nice room, comfortable beds, very spacious
What could be improved: The door of the bathroom, the hair dryer wasn’t working every 30 secondsJeffrey from Canada – 19 February 2025 (7/10)
The hotel's location is spot-on being just on the edge of Roma but also accessible by the Metro close to Centro Medico station. The room is well sized/furnished and the bed was VERY comfortable as were the linens and pillows, communal kitchen and terrace were nice places to unwind outside your room with or without company depending on the time of day – free coffee/tea were good bonuses and the kitchen water filter was clutch for staying hydrated without buying water. I would stay again in a pinch.
What could be improved: General condition of the room left something to be desired – chair was broken/missing a screw, squashed bug on the wall, linens were clean but had some stains. Personally I'm not fussed by these things for the price paid, but it is reflective of housekeeping quality/attention to detail even for a basic room (this is not how I would invite a guest into my own spare room for example). If these things were fixed before my arrival then this place would be an absolute gem.Nikolina from Bulgaria – 14 February 2025 (8/10)
The location is pretty comfortable and you get a private bathroom for a very little pay
What could be improved: The common area wasn’t very nice and was always busy and overpopulated, seems many people live in that place for extended periods of timeSteve from United States – 28 January 2025 (8/10)
Although the description of the room was odd (by no one's fault) on the website. I found the place comfortable and the staff were extremely helpful. The location is outstanding as it's near many restaurants, shops and a local market. At that market you'll find basically what you need to cook for yourself which the property had everything needed. The neighborhood it's self was quaint and easy to get around. Should I return I'll definitely consider staying again.
What could be improved: The website was a bit confusing.Joas from Netherlands – 20 January 2025 (7/10)
I’m a regular guest at colmena. Overall I really like the rooms and the services.
What could be improved: My rating is based on several reasons:
1. Some of the kitchen items (pans, plates, glasses, and cutlery) were not clean.
2. Guests are no longer allowed to store extra items in the shared kitchen fridge, which used to be permitted. This feels frustrating, especially since it’s a service we are paying for.
3. The internet connection was very poor.
4. Smoking is no longer allowed in the designated smoking areas from before, which now forces guests to go outside even late at night.
5. The most upsetting experience was having food thrown away without any prior notice or attempt to check whose it was.
Overall, it didn’t feel as warm or accommodating as before, which was disappointing.Todd from United States – 12 January 2025 (8/10)
The staff was very friendly, helpful, and always working hard. The place was very clean. They have a very large communal sofa and a massive big screen TV. The kitchen looked well stocked. There is a nice low-key craft beer bar across the street, a fabulous Argentinian restaurant 100 ft away, and a food stand at the corner (30 ft) – that had amazing breakfast food on Saturday.
What could be improved: No hot water.Amy from New Zealand – 29 November 2024 (8/10)
Lovely and extremely professional staff. Shared kitchen is well equipped. Laundry onsite. Complimentary water, tea and coffee, as well as popcorn. The rooms are basic but very functional. Some reviews mention road noise, which can be a little loud at times but not really an issue at night when it’s quieter. We would stay again! Good location in Roma Sur and very walkable to Roma Norte, Condesa and further into the city. Very close to the train line also.
Eileen from Ireland – 20 October 2024 (9/10)
– really good wifi
– very close to metro and in a very good area
– room was spacious, clean and modern
– dining area and living area comfortable and modern
What could be improved: – cooker needs to be replaced, oven did not close properly and a lot of the rings on the cooker did not work properly. We like to cook to save money and it was difficult with this cooker.
– sink in the kitchen does not drain properly either.
– there did not really seem to be any workers around, for example bins were over flowing one of the days and we did not know who to tell. We were told someone would show up to help us check out and no one showed up. We only saw one person who checked us in on the first day.
