Hostel Mundo Joven Catedral Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Hostel Mundo Joven Catedral on República de Guatemala, you immediately know you’ve found something special in the heart of Mexico City. This three-star hostel sits right in the Centro Histórico, and I mean literally steps from the Metropolitan Cathedral — you can practically hear the bells from your window. The building itself has that classic colonial charm you’d expect in this part of the city, but inside it’s been thoughtfully updated without losing its character. The attention to detail in preserving the original architecture while modernizing the interior creates an inviting atmosphere that appeals to diverse travelers.

Location That Actually Matters

Honestly, the location here is pretty incredible. You’re surrounded by centuries of history, with the Zócalo just a two-minute walk away and Templo Mayor practically next door. What I really appreciate is how walkable everything is from here — the Palacio de Bellas Artes, countless taquerias, and those amazing street food vendors are all within easy reach. The couples who stay here seem to get it too, rating the location 9.7, which makes total sense when you’re exploring the city on foot together. Being positioned in the historic center means you’re never far from world-class museums, galleries, and cultural landmarks.

The Room Experience

The room setup works well for what you’re paying. I stayed in one of their dorms, and while it’s definitely hostel-style accommodation, everything felt clean and well-maintained. The beds are sturdy (no squeaking when your bunkmate rolls over), and they’ve actually thought about privacy with individual reading lights and power outlets. You know what surprised me? How quiet it stays at night despite being in such a bustling area — the windows do a decent job blocking out the street noise. Each bunk includes secure storage and comfortable bedding that exceeds typical hostel standards.

Social Atmosphere and Amenities

There’s a good mix of travelers here, from backpackers doing the Mexico circuit to couples wanting an affordable base in the historic center. The common areas encourage mingling without feeling forced, and the staff — well, they actually know the neighborhood and can point you toward places that aren’t just tourist traps. The fact that they have so many repeat guests tells you something about the experience. I mean, people don’t come back to hostels unless they’re doing something right. The communal kitchen and lounge spaces foster genuine connections among guests from around the world.

Why Guests Love It

What keeps drawing people back is this combination of prime location and genuine hospitality that you don’t always find in budget accommodations. The 8.4 rating reflects what you actually get — solid basics in an unbeatable spot without any pretense. You’re not paying for fancy amenities, but you are getting clean, safe accommodation where you can walk to incredible food, historic sites, and authentic Mexico City experiences. For travelers who want to be in the thick of things rather than commuting from some distant hotel district, this place just makes sense. The value proposition here is exceptional for anyone prioritizing location and authentic cultural immersion.

Reviews of Hostel Mundo Joven Catedral

  • Karl from United Kingdom – 9 May 2025 (8/10)

Great location with an amazing view from the roof (main square). Good breakfast and facilities.

What could be improved: Beds are very unstable and should be replaced, really.

  • Dolores from United States – 6 April 2025 (8/10)

I've stayed here twice so far and it will be my go-to place when I need to fly in or out of Mexico City. Although the lobby and cafe are old and worn, I arrived very late and saw how thoroughly they scrub the place. Small dorms with big lockers and comfortable beds. Bring your own lock. Very quiet. Gorgeous views from the two terraces, one off the kitchen and one on the roof where they have a bar. A faucet with potable water is in the kitchen. The staff is very good at problem solving. A security guard watched the door at night in addition to the desk clerks. Free luggage storage when you leave. Breakfast isn't fancy, but you can eat it at an outdoor table overlooking a park, which is rare near the zocalo. I didn't know this until too late, but you can give a deposit to "rent" a towel.

  • Thomas from United Kingdom – 22 February 2025 (9/10)

An ideal location to arrive at in CDMX, if you arrive early there's luggage storage and free walking tours at 11am- Daniel is a great guide! The hostel is well equipped with a downstairs breakfast/cafe area, kitchen on the fifth floor with terrace and amazing views as well as the rooftop bar. The location is right next to the Cathedral and you can easily walk to plenty of attractions, equally there are excellent public transport links. The area felt safe and the hostel themselves take security very seriously.

  • Zoe from United Kingdom – 22 November 2024 (8/10)

Excellent location, awesome rooftop bar with great views and live bands. The free walking tours with Daniel (we loved Daniel!) are a massive highlight and great for seeing such a huge city if you’re on a budget. Ana and the team on reception were brilliant and couldn’t help enough. Ana managed to get us tickets to the sold out Frida Khalo museum which I will be forever grateful for! The breakfast is different every day.

What could be improved: The beds were narrow and uncomfortable, there was only warm water first thing in the morning, the hotel is very noisy and it echos as the wooden panel windows open out on to all the other rooms and reception. The hostel knows it’s noisy as they offer ear plugs. On the last day the water came out brown so we couldn’t shower.

  • Malcolm from Germany – 20 October 2024 (9/10)

It was central. Nice service. Close to a lot of restaurants bars and sightseeing points. We liked it here.

What could be improved: Little expensive

  • Eva from United States – 14 September 2024 (8/10)

    Location

What could be improved: No noise shielding. The windows are too fragile.

  • Alex from United Kingdom – 31 August 2024 (9/10)

nice breakfast, great terrace bar. value for money. staff were lovely, especially the doorman, Julio. The staff also booked a taxi for us (last minute) for the airport and we were very grateful,

What could be improved: The tap in the room spurted everywhere which was irritating. From 6am there was a lot of noise which woke us up lots of times as downstairs echoes a lot. Also on the day we checked out, we had to pay to go into the hostel bar which was a shame considering we were guests.

  • Miriam from Australia – 24 August 2024 (8/10)

    Amazing rooftop, excellent location

What could be improved: Our room had no window to the outside.

  • Sara from Italy – 19 August 2024 (9/10)

Property is in the real center of México city, top position, free breakfast and a very nice terrace to admire the city! Staff is very kind 🙂

What could be improved: Everything great 👍🏼

  • Leonel from Mexico – 30 July 2024 (9/10)

    The location and the access

What could be improved: I didn’t like the bathroom and the sheets
