Hotel Principal Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Hotel Principal on Bolívar Street, you immediately get why this place has such a loyal following. It’s one of those three-star gems that doesn’t try to be something it’s not — just solid, comfortable hospitality in the heart of Mexico City. The building itself has character, and honestly, the location alone makes it worth considering. I mean, you’re literally steps away from the Zócalo and all the historic action that makes this city so captivating.

Location & Neighborhood

Here’s what I love about staying in Centro Histórico — you can walk everywhere that matters. The hotel sits right in the thick of things, which explains why couples rate the location so highly (apparently a 9.5 out of 10, and I get it). You’ve got the Metropolitan Cathedral practically around the corner, the Palacio Nacional is a quick stroll, and the energy of the main square is infectious. Sure, it can get busy during the day, but that’s part of the charm. Plus, the metro stations are super close if you want to venture out to other neighborhoods.

The Room Experience

The rooms at Hotel Principal are what I’d call “pleasantly straightforward.” Nothing fancy, but everything works well and feels clean and comfortable. You know what really impressed me? The attention to detail in the housekeeping — these folks clearly take pride in their work. The beds are actually quite comfortable (always a gamble with three-star places), and the bathrooms are compact but functional. If you’re looking for a spa or elaborate amenities, this isn’t your spot, but if you want a good night’s sleep in a great location, you’re set.

Breakfast & Dining

The American-style breakfast here is honestly better than I expected. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s hearty and gets the job done before you head out exploring. What I appreciated was the consistency — the staff clearly has their routine down, and the coffee is decent (important when you’re gearing up for a day of walking around the city). There’s no on-site restaurant for other meals, but honestly, you’re in one of the best food neighborhoods in Mexico City, so that’s hardly a problem.

Why Guests Love It

The repeat guest thing really tells you everything you need to know about this place. People come back because Hotel Principal delivers exactly what it promises — a clean, comfortable base in an unbeatable location. The staff genuinely seems to care about making your stay smooth, and there’s something refreshing about a hotel that focuses on doing the basics really well rather than trying to dazzle you with unnecessary extras. For the price point and location, it’s honestly hard to beat, especially if you’re the type of traveler who spends most of your time out exploring rather than hanging around the hotel.

Loved staying here. Such a clean and cozy space to stay in. Very beautiful. El Zocalo is around a 8 min walk. The metro station is nearby there as well. The airport was convenient too. All the staff are friendly and are available to accommodate your stay. Breakfast was included, everything was delicious. Will stay again if around. Also they have a seating area in the lobby with charging stations which I loved. Also they are able to hold your things before and after check out at no cost.

  • Erin from Australia – 22 March 2025 (8/10)

The rooms were clean and spacious. I was able to leave luggage after check out time before continuing to my next destination. The hotel is in the middle of downtown historic district and the streets were safe in evenings and early morning.

What could be improved: The reception staff spoke limited English which wasn't a real problem as we could get by with limited conversation about check in and luggage. I wasn't able to get information about local sites or attractions from the front desk or any maps, but as I had google and data available this wasn't a big problem.
