Maria Del Alma House Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Maria Del Alma House on Calle París, you immediately get this feeling that you’ve stumbled onto something special. It’s not flashy or trying too hard — just this charming three-star property that feels more like staying at a well-traveled friend’s place than a typical hotel. The building has character, you know what I mean? There’s something about the way it sits on this tree-lined street in Coyoacán that makes you slow down and actually notice your surroundings. The entrance welcomes you with authentic Mexican architectural details that set the tone for your stay.

Location & Neighborhood

Honestly, the location is probably the biggest win here — and I’m not just saying that because guests rated it 9.4. Coyoacán is one of those neighborhoods in Mexico City where you can actually walk around and feel like you’re experiencing the real culture, not just tourist stuff. You’re close enough to Frida Kahlo’s house and the main plaza that you can easily explore on foot, but far enough from the chaos that you can actually get some peace. I mean, couples absolutely love it here for good reason — there’s something romantic about wandering these cobblestone streets in the evening. The surrounding area offers galleries, cafes, and markets within easy walking distance.

The Room Experience

The room itself surprised me in the best way. Look, it’s not going to blow you away with fancy amenities, but what they do well is comfort. The beds are seriously good — like, sink-into-them-and-forget-your-travel-fatigue good. I actually understood why guests keep raving about the sleep quality here. The rooms have this clean, uncluttered feel with just enough local touches to remind you where you are without being kitschy about it. Each space is thoughtfully designed for relaxation and functionality.

Breakfast & Dining

Breakfast is where Maria Del Alma House really shows it gets modern travelers. They’ve got continental options, sure, but they also do vegetarian and vegan spreads that actually taste good — not like afterthoughts. I appreciated that they seem to source locally when possible, and the coffee (this is Mexico City, after all) is exactly what you’d hope for. You can eat in their little dining area or, honestly, I preferred taking my coffee outside when the weather was nice. The restaurant staff is attentive and knowledgeable about local recommendations.

Why Guests Love It

What keeps people coming back isn’t any single thing — it’s how everything works together. The staff genuinely seems to care about your experience without being overly formal about it. The whole place has this relaxed energy that matches Coyoacán perfectly. You’re getting solid value for a three-star property, especially considering that location rating isn’t just hype. It’s the kind of place where you end up staying an extra day because you’re not ready to leave the neighborhood yet, and honestly, that’s probably the best compliment I can give any hotel. The property consistently delivers on its promise of authentic, comfortable hospitality.

Reviews of Maria Del Alma House

  • Gabriele from Germany – 20 May 2025 (10/10)

This is a beautiful place, and the hosts make everybody feel at home. Great freshly-prepared hot breakfast, fruit and good coffee. Wonderful room with sunny terrace in a green patio, room design reminiscent of the Blue House. Would definitely stay there again.

Maria del Alma offered an authentic Mexican experience in a beautiful home that has been in the owner’s family for over 100 years. We did not lack for anything during our stay – the house was located in a safe walking neighborhood, the rooms were extremely clean, fast WiFi was available, the showers had hot water, and you were even able to flush toilet paper in the restrooms. We also loved the fact that their housekeepers refreshed our rooms and even changed our bedsheets extremely often. It was a joy to wake up to breakfast and coffee cooked by the owner each morning, who was extremely intelligent and knowledgeable in multiple subjects. He was happy to give us suggestions for our itinerary and make sure that our stay was as pleasant as possible. A convenience store (where you can purchase packs of water, toiletries, and other essentials), many coffee shops and restaurants, a pharmacy, the plaza where a market is located, the Frida Kahlo Museum, and a tour bus stop were all located within blocks of the house, making this an ideal location for any tourists. We are so grateful to Don Fernando and Don Jorge for their hospitality and loved every minute of our time at Maria del Alma.

  • Cherie from United States – 1 April 2025 (10/10)

Jorge and Fernando were so kind and helpful. The grounds are lovely; the location is ideal. Our stay felt so comfortable, safe and accommodating. It was a pleasant surprise that our room was cleaned and refreshed every day. The breakfasts were excellent; in 10 days we did not have the same breakfast twice, except every breakfast began with a delightful serving of fresh fruit. If I have the opportunity to return to Mexico City I would want to stay at Maria del Alma House!

What could be improved: Hmmm…one night my husband ended up with numerous mosquitos bites. I had none! We did keep windows and even the patio door open for the fresh air. It would have been nice to have some programs like Netflix; I watched Mexican news channels instead!

  • Kristine from United States – 29 March 2025 (10/10)

Great location, nice staff, lovely breakfast

What could be improved: We had a large room that was great but the double bed was small. I would suggest putting at least a queen bed there- there is plenty of room!

  • Anne from United States – 25 March 2025 (10/10)

We had a wonderful 8-day stay at Maria Del Alma House. Fernando and Jorge are welcoming hosts and gave us good advice about things to do and see as well as practicalities of things like transportation. The room was comfortable and very clean, the patio and garden are delightful. Daily hot breakfast with fresh fruit was delicious. We enjoyed meeting and talking with the other guests over breakfast as well. Located on a quiet street, but very close to the central plaza of Coyacoan.

What could be improved: Honestly, everything was great.

  • Ashleigh from United States – 21 March 2025 (8/10)

Fernando and Jorge were absolutely delightful and kind hosts. The property felt like a lovely oasis but steps away from all the places we wanted to be.

What could be improved: The water pressure was just a trickle in the shower.

  • Howard from United States – 6 March 2025 (9/10)

Fernando is a warm and gracious host; his breakfasts reflect his experience in fine dining. The property is gorgeous, the grounds well kept, the room and bed quite comfortable and the location, between Viveros and the center of Coyoacan and a few blocks from the Casa Azul, can't be beat.

  • Valeria from Mexico – 12 February 2025 (10/10)

Es una casa tradicional de Coyoacán, los anfitriones son muy amables y accesibles

What could be improved: Breakfast is only served for an hour (super early)

  • Lea from United States – 6 February 2025 (10/10)

This guest house is amazing! My room was huge and overlooked the beautiful gardens below, and it had a large terrace with lots of plants and birds – quite an oasis. The location is great, a few blocks from the center of Coyoacan but very safe and quiet. Fernando and Jorge were so welcoming and helpful.
