Casa Molcajete Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Casa Molcajete on Centenario street, you immediately get that “this is exactly what I was hoping for” feeling. It’s tucked into one of those charming Coyoacán blocks where the cobblestones are slightly uneven and the trees actually provide shade — you know, the real Mexico City that tourists dream about but don’t always find. The building itself has this understated elegance that feels authentically Mexican without trying too hard, and honestly, that’s harder to pull off than you’d think.

The Coyoacán Advantage

Here’s what I love about staying in Coyoacán — you’re in one of the city’s most walkable neighborhoods, but you’re not dealing with the chaos of Centro Histórico or the sterile feel of Polanco. Casa Molcajete sits right in the sweet spot where you can stroll to Frida Kahlo’s house (it’s literally a ten-minute walk), grab incredible coffee at local spots, and still feel like you’re experiencing neighborhood life rather than tourist central. The couples who stay here seem to get it — there’s something romantic about wandering these tree-lined streets that bigger, flashier areas just can’t match.

Your Room

The room situation here is what really won me over, and apparently I’m not alone since guests keep raving about the beds. I mean, we’ve all stayed in boutique places where the design looks great but you wake up feeling like you wrestled with the mattress all night — that’s definitely not the case here. The rooms have this clean, modern Mexican aesthetic with just enough local touches to remind you where you are without feeling like a theme park. The space feels thoughtfully designed rather than just decorated, if that makes sense.

The Details That Matter

What strikes me about this three-star place is how they’ve nailed the fundamentals that bigger hotels sometimes overlook. The staff actually knows the neighborhood — like, they can tell you which taco stand is worth the walk and which museum exhibitions are currently running. The building stays quiet at night (crucial in a city that never really sleeps), and the common areas have this relaxed vibe where you might actually want to hang out rather than just pass through. It’s those small things that make you feel like you chose well rather than just booked a bed.

Why Guests Love It

Look, Casa Molcajete isn’t trying to be the fanciest place in Mexico City, and that’s exactly why it works so well. You’re getting authentic Coyoacán charm, genuinely comfortable accommodations, and a location that puts you right in the heart of one of the city’s most beloved neighborhoods. The fact that recent guests rated the location so highly tells you everything — when you’re exploring during the day and sleeping well at night, you remember why you travel in the first place. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to extend your stay, which honestly is the best compliment any hotel can get.

Mexico hotels keep explorers close to cenote dives, vibrant mercados, and artisan collectives weaving Oaxacan textiles.

This was the 1st place we stayed in on our 1st visit to Mexico City. We did not want to leave it as was just the perfect place for us to navigate this area of Mexico., We booked Monica & Mauricio's apartment for 7 nights and it felt like we were living in a real home amongst local people. The neighbours were really friendly & always kept the courtyard area clean & tidy. Full of lovely green plants as well.

The apartment had such beautiful artwork, great comfortable bed, hot shower, plenty of kitchen utensils for what we needed and good WiFi. We bought some foodstuff from the supermarket just up the road & mostly had breakfast at the dining area which was lovely. There was an upright fan which really kept us cool both during the morning and night time.

We had a small issue, Monica had Mauricio come round & sort it out for us, we had a great chat with him, and he spoke better English than we did Spanish! We chatted about music & how we were going to a gig in Roma Norte. Mauricio found out the gig was cancelled & let us know. We had not been advised and therefore were really appreciative of them letting us know. This meant we were able to contact the ticket agent & obtain a refund & not turn up & be disappointed. We did manage to book tickets for another gig, so it all ended positively.

Coyoacan is a vibrant area, we felt like there was definitely a rich culture & lots to experience. This apartment was right in the perfect position in walking distance to find great art, architecture, great food and felt safe. Frida Khalo's Casa Azul is a few minutes away, likewise Parque Frida Khalo is close by with bronze statues of her & Diego Rivero set amongst the bougainvillea, really beautiful. We ate in Centenario 107, pizza was nice but we much preferred to eat in Ecosentli as it had really freshly made food made to order, mostly ran by female staff.

The location was great! The comfort of the apartment was also enjoyable. The neighbors were friendly and welcoming. It was nice to have our own kitchen space also! The beds were comfortable. The owner was helpful and attentive!

  • Denis from Mexico – 1 April 2025 (9/10)

Amazing location right in Coyaocan centro yet very quiet….no trafic noise at night. Host was very responsive and helpful.
The kitchen was well stocked. We found a few bottles of water in the frigerator,as well as some coffee to get you started.
The second bedroom has a small bed but there is a futon available in the living room
the apartment was clean, The two bedroom apartment is on the second floor which could present a challenge for anyone with mobility issues

What could be improved: no complaints at all

  • Leil from United States – 23 March 2025 (9/10)

Location was great, easy access. Comfortable beds. Flexibility in checking and great communication

What could be improved: Wasn't able to connect to internet.

  • 772kdub from Germany – 19 March 2025 (9/10)

Spacious and comfortable apartment, clean, communicative owner, great location (walking distance to restaurants and parks).

  • Andrew from Australia – 2 March 2025 (9/10)

So close to beautiful Coyoacan. So many coffee places, markets, street food stalls and restaurants just said the corner. It was the perfect place for us to explore.

What could be improved: For 4 adults it was cosy but not spacious. That's the only reason I gave 9 stars and not 10. We would gladly stay here again if we get back to Mexico City.

  • Stief from Mexico – 19 February 2025 (8/10)

Close to city centre, clean and modern. Had everything we needed. Hosts were communicative and accommodating

What could be improved: A bit noisy and on a busy street
