Habitaciones Coyoacan (UNAM) Overview

First Impressions

When I first stumbled upon Habitaciones Coyoacan (UNAM), I’ll be honest — I wasn’t expecting much from a three-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the best discoveries come when you’re not overthinking things. This little gem sits quietly on Cerro del Hombre, and there’s something refreshingly unpretentious about it that I actually found charming. The building itself has that lived-in Mexico City feel — not flashy, but solid and welcoming in a way that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere real rather than some cookie-cutter hotel.

The Coyoacán Advantage

Here’s the thing about staying in Coyoacán — you’re basically planted in one of Mexico City’s most authentic neighborhoods, and this place puts you right in the sweet spot. I mean, couples are rating the location 9.6 out of 10, which honestly makes perfect sense once you’re here. You can walk to the colorful markets, those incredible little cafés that locals actually frequent, and the whole area has this bohemian vibe that feels worlds away from the tourist traps. The proximity to UNAM is obvious from the name, but what surprised me was how this location gives you easy access to both the university energy and the historic charm of old Coyoacán.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in was — well, let’s call it functional with character. You’re not getting marble bathrooms or fancy amenities here, but everything works, it’s clean, and there’s something to be said for simplicity. The beds are comfortable enough (I slept well), and the windows actually open, which I always appreciate. What struck me most was how quiet it gets at night, despite being in such a vibrant neighborhood. The furnishings are basic but thoughtful — you get the sense someone actually considered what travelers need rather than just filling space.

Local Flavor and Practicalities

One thing I really appreciated was how the staff seemed genuinely connected to the neighborhood — they knew which taco stands were worth the walk and could point you toward the weekend markets that aren’t in guidebooks. There’s no fancy restaurant on-site, but honestly, why would you want one when you’re surrounded by some of the city’s best street food? The whole setup feels more like staying with locals who happen to rent rooms than a traditional hotel experience. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle in this area, but the staff helped figure it out without making it feel like a huge ordeal.

Why Guests Love It

That 8.9 rating starts making sense when you realize what this place actually delivers — authentic Mexico City living without the pretense or the price tag of fancier hotels. You’re not paying for amenities you won’t use; you’re paying for location, comfort, and that increasingly rare thing in travel: genuine local character. If you want to experience Coyoacán the way it’s meant to be experienced — as a neighborhood rather than a destination — this is honestly one of the better bases I’ve found. It’s not trying to be something it’s not, and sometimes that’s exactly what makes a place memorable.

To book hotel in Mexico for Día de los Muertos parades, travelers secure rooms months ahead to pair plaza vigils with dawn churros.

Reviews of Habitaciones Coyoacan (UNAM)

  • Sheng-chih from Mexico – 2 January 2025 (9/10)

house is nice, sweet, elegant, and quiet.

  • Eckardt from United States – 26 July 2024 (9/10)

Comfy bed. Hot shower. Quiet street.

What could be improved: Only one towel bar for 2 bath towels.

  • Blair from Canada – 29 February 2024 (9/10)

Our host was very pleasant and easy to communicate with. Our room was nice and bright but the blackout blind made it nice and dark at night (easy to sleep). It had plenty of closet space and it was probably furnished. Especially appreciated the comfortable bed at the end of each day of site seeing!

  • Brian from United States – 23 January 2024 (9/10)

Susana is very nice. Trre is very nice. Room is spacious. Location is very close to the UNAM. Very quiet at night.

What could be improved: Cleaniess can be better.

  • Samantha from United States – 9 September 2023 (9/10)

Very quiet at night- no worries about loud cars or dogs keeping me awake. good value (especially for extended stays). Small, but good quality, shared kitchen. Quick and friendly responses from the host. Lots of pillows and clean towels available.

What could be improved: The mattress was fairly hard.

  • Kukla from United States – 6 September 2023 (9/10)

Cute terrace, spacious room, water filter was very useful

What could be improved: A lot of light in the morning and a lot of music being played just outside our window

  • Anne from United States – 18 January 2023 (8/10)

Quiet guest house in excellent location in Coyoacán. Walking distance to many restaurants and to UNAM where we were taking a Spanish course. Spacious room with kitchenette where we could cook simple meals. Spacious shared terrace accessible directly from the room. Comfortable bed and super hot shower with great pressure. Caretaker lived upstairs and was available for any issues. Hostess was out of town during our stay (we met her on the last day) but was reachable to address any issues. Good value in an area with few lodging options. We will stay again if we're back in the area.

What could be improved: A malfunctioning light sensor in the hallway outside our room that flashed off and on at night. Hostess was made aware and was having it worked on when we left.

  • Timothy from United States – 9 September 2022 (9/10)

Everything is so cool here! Very stylish, but eclectic. This is a great place for the savvy, independent traveler who does not need coddling. The bed was comfortable (I did not use the stacked roll-away mattress), as was the bedding. The bathroom was very nice, with good hot water in the shower. I arrived earlier than check-in time, but they worked with me so that I could drop my bags and then return later once my room was ready. This was so nice! When you arrive, you will find a laminated page with the rules of the residencia, as well as practical information, including wifi passwords and useful phone numbers (emergency, delivery options, etc.).
There was a great galley-style kitchen right outside my door with coffee and tea that I could make for myself fresh—at breakfast time or whenever. There was a community Nespresso machine (with capsules!), but there is also a drop coffee maker in the room. There was also a small oven, microwave, cooktop, with basic dishes and cookware. I had a small refrigerator in my room, which was also very practical. I particularly liked the corner desk in my room (#4) and the fast, reliable wifi, which allowed me to work during my visit.
The location is great! It is a 5-minute walk to the Copilco (line 3) metro stop and a 20-minute walk to UNAM buildings surrounding "Las Islas", a popular campus quad area. Kitty corner from Copilco station, there is a 7-11, where you can buy many basic groceries. If you're looking for something more than uni student fast food (i.e. pizza) or street stalls, 10 minutes in the opposite direction, you will find Oasis Coyoacán, with a fantastic selection of restaurants and shopping.

What could be improved: Please allow me to clarify that I liked everything about this place. That said, I noticed some things that might not appeal universally:
    1) The quiet times (after 8pm) might not work for everyone. That said, I understand. In this house, there is little to deaden sound waves, so any noise really reverberates and travels. I am rather quiet, so this was not a problem.
    2) You are also expected to sort (into organic v. non-organic) and take out your own trash at departure, which some might find to be too much of an inconvenience. I did not mind this.
    3) This is not a hotel, so somebody will not make up your room every day. This is how I prefer it, so I did not mind in the slightest!
    4) This room is claimed to be a King suite in the listing, but the bed is not a king size. It is maybe a queen.

  • Edith from United Kingdom – 27 June 2022 (9/10)

The house is in a safe and quiet area, walking distance from two metro stations and the centre of Coyoacan. The UNAM campus is within the walking distance, too, at least its northern edge. The room is spacious, with plenty of storage space, and the mattress is very good. The wifi is stable.

What could be improved: The description on the website says that there is a 24-hour front desk. This is not true: there is no front desk as such. I have been given instructions on how to get my keys, airbnb-like, and when I arrived, I was helped by another guest. Also, there is no kettle in the room, contrary to the description – rather, there is a small kitchenette shared between a few rooms, with a microwave and a toaster.
