Hostal Amigo Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Hostal Amigo on Isabel la Católica, you immediately get that “this place knows what it’s doing” vibe. It’s one of those three-star spots that doesn’t try to be something it’s not — just solid, reliable hospitality in the heart of Mexico City. The building itself has that classic Centro Histórico charm, and honestly, the staff greets you like you’re actually welcome here, not just another booking number.

Location That Actually Matters

Here’s the thing about staying on Isabel la Católica — you’re basically in the sweet spot of everything worth seeing. I mean, you can walk to the Zócalo in about ten minutes, and the Palacio de Bellas Artes is right there too. What I really appreciate is how couples seem to get this location (they rate it 9.4, which honestly makes sense). You’re close enough to duck back for a siesta between museum visits, but far enough from the main plaza chaos that you can actually sleep at night. The Metro Allende station is practically around the corner, so getting anywhere else in the city is pretty straightforward.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in was clean and functional — nothing fancy, but everything worked properly. You know what I mean? Hot water when you need it, decent Wi-Fi, and a bed that doesn’t leave you wondering what you did to your back. The windows actually open (not always a given in Mexico City), and if you get one facing the street, you’ll hear the city waking up in the morning. Some people might find it noisy, but I sort of love that authentic urban soundtrack.

What Keeps People Coming Back

There’s something to be said for a place that has more repeat guests than most other properties — and after staying here, I get it. The staff remembers faces, they’re genuinely helpful with directions and recommendations, and there’s this comfortable, no-nonsense atmosphere that just works. It’s not trying to impress you with marble lobbies or fancy amenities, but rather with that rare thing in hospitality: consistency. The common areas are clean, the parking situation is manageable (which is honestly a minor miracle in Centro), and they seem to actually care about maintaining the place properly.

Why Guests Love It

Look, if you’re expecting high-end accommodations, this isn’t your spot. But if you want a reliable base for exploring Mexico City’s historic center without paying tourist-trap prices, Hostal Amigo delivers exactly what it promises. The location rating of 8.7 from recent guests tells the real story — this is about being where you want to be, with people who know how to take care of travelers. It’s the kind of place you’d recommend to friends who want to experience the real Mexico City, not some sanitized version of it.

Best hotels in Mexico blend rooftop pools, cenote-inspired spas, and chef-led tastings of regional mole flights.

Reviews of Hostal Amigo

  • Terhi from Finland – 4 May 2025 (6/10)

Location is very good and easy to arrive. Also possible for late/night arrivals.

What could be improved: We chose the hostel for kitchen but nobody told us that kitchen is not for use friday mornings (we arrived thursday evening) before 12:00pm. And other days it was open just 08:00-16:00 so it wasn’t possible to cook dinner in a hostel and also I had to wait every morning that they open the kitchen for make breakfast. Doesn’t work for people who want to eat/deink coffee early or have dinner in a hostel. And the system to use kitchen was complicates because the door is locked and every time you want to enter to the kitchen you have to go to ask the key. Gas wasn’t working before I went to ask how ot works and then worker came to open it with a key.
Also showers should only be used 5am-11am. I used at evening when we arrived but water was freesing. So hot water just at mornings.

  • Madara from Latvia – 22 April 2025 (8/10)

good central & safe location, super attentive staff (especially the night-turn guy with the glasses – thanks a lot! 🙂 ), clean and quiet space. no breakfast, but there is a kitchen though

  • Javier from United States – 11 April 2025 (7/10)

Close to Music District cool restaurants

What could be improved: Leaving the key at front desk every time you leave, it was somewhat annoying

  • Mark from United Kingdom – 7 February 2025 (8/10)

Central, clean & good value for money. We shared a private room though, so can’t comment on the dorms.

  • Jessy from Netherlands – 7 November 2024 (8/10)

    The location was excellent
All the receptionist staff were friendly and understanding
    Great lobby music
The hostel really attracts solo travellers and generally backpackers

What could be improved: The bathrooms weren't really clean, especially the toilets
The pillow was a bit thin for my liking
Not once, but twice I came back to someone else in my bed (positive note, they solves it bith times)

  • Jennifer from Canada – 4 February 2024 (7/10)

The location was amazing and I felt very safe there.
The property itself is a bit run down and basic but honestly for the price it was really good.
They have 24 concierge and we’re very accommodating with check in and leaving luggage. The staff was very sweet and the place very thoroughly cleaned everyday. I was very lucky to have a window in my room as not all rooms do, so I was very happy with my room.

What could be improved: The bed sheets were ripped. Slight smell of smoke in building. I think people smoke outside and the smoke comes in.
The pictures are not accurate to what you get

  • Yesenia from Mexico – 30 November 2023 (8/10)

    Location was great!!

What could be improved: People inside tje hostel were getting sick something like a flu, noticed that housekeeping was only changing bedsheets but not the blanket where sick people were sleeping, I also got the flu, only artificial ventilation

  • Nahim from France – 15 July 2023 (8/10)

    Simple with a large lobby

What could be improved: Kitchen curfew and no breakfast option.

  • James from Canada – 27 May 2023 (7/10)

The location was good. The staff were friendly and helpful. The kitchen was a nice feature.

What could be improved: The fact that I couldn’t keep my key when I went out was a little frustrating and the big block of wood keychain made no sense. Also the all the COVID posters turned me off. isn’t this over ?

  • Mahmoud from United Kingdom – 27 April 2023 (7/10)

    good

    What could be improved: awesome
