Hotel Santa Maria Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel Santa Maria on Manuel Carpio, you immediately get the sense this is a neighborhood gem rather than a flashy tourist trap. The three-star property sits comfortably in Santa María la Ribera, and honestly, that’s part of its charm — you’re staying somewhere that feels authentically Mexican rather than sanitized for visitors. The fact that they have free private parking right at the hotel is actually a huge deal in Mexico City, where finding a safe spot for your car can be a real headache.
The Neighborhood Advantage
Santa María la Ribera is one of those areas that locals know but tourists are just discovering, which means you get authentic street food and genuine cantinas without the markup. I mean, you’re close enough to the historic center that a quick Metro ride gets you there, but far enough out that you can actually breathe and walk around without fighting crowds. The couples who stay here seem to really get it — they’ve rated the location 8.8, and I can see why. There’s something romantic about strolling through this tree-lined neighborhood in the evening, grabbing tacos from a corner stand, then heading back to your quiet hotel.
What Your Room Offers
The room itself won’t win any design awards, but it’s clean, comfortable, and has everything you actually need rather than stuff that looks good in photos. The beds are solid, the air conditioning works (crucial in Mexico City’s warmer months), and you get a decent amount of space to spread out your things. What I appreciate is that they’ve clearly put thought into the practical details — good water pressure, reliable WiFi, and blackout curtains that actually block light if you need to sleep in after a late night exploring the city.
The Repeat Guest Factor
Here’s something interesting — this place has way more repeat guests than most other hotels in the area, and that tells you something important. People aren’t just staying here once and moving on; they’re coming back, which usually means the staff treats you well and the experience is consistently good rather than hit-or-miss. The front desk folks seem to remember returning guests, and there’s a relaxed, almost family-run feeling to the whole operation that you don’t get at bigger chain properties.
Why Guests Love It
Look, if you want a rooftop pool and a fancy restaurant, this isn’t your place. But if you want to stay somewhere that feels like a real part of Mexico City rather than a tourist bubble, Hotel Santa Maria delivers exactly that. The location rating of 8.9 from recent guests isn’t just about convenience — it’s about being in a neighborhood where you can grab amazing coffee in the morning, explore local markets, and still easily reach all the major sights. Plus, knowing your car is safely parked and you’re not paying resort prices for basic services? That’s the kind of practical comfort that makes a trip actually relaxing.

Reviews of Hotel Santa Maria

The location is good
What could be improved: I was in a 3rd floor , no elevator, no help offered with the luggageWilliam from United States – 3 April 2024 (8/10)
I've previously and positively reviewed this hotel. I continue to return over the years because of the hotel's location in historic Colonia Santa Maria la Ribera, excellent and accommodating staff, comfortability of the rooms and the value staying here holds for me. The hotel continues to upgrade the facilities. Since my 2023 visit: new window coverings, new room light fixtures and controls, excellent and almost immediate availability of hot water at all hours and a room safe. Remember: no elevator in this 4-floor hotel, walk-up necessary; no bellman; complimentary indoor and secure parking; no on-site coffee shop (but a good one is next door, others and a bakery that is steps away); firm mattress and pillows; two bottles of purified water included, daily; bathroom toiletries and excellent quality towels. Prior reference in a review to adult content cable channels: they're gone.
What could be improved: There is nothing I did not and do not like about this hotel.Omar from Mexico – 18 February 2024 (7/10)

What could be improved: Security in room doorLorena from Mexico – 24 November 2023 (8/10)
The location is great because there are many restaurants for all budgets and transportation is really close by.
What could be improved: It is quite noisy, I think is because of the structure, there is echo almost everywhere. Also there were some drunk guys in one room, I really dislike this because it sais that is a "family" hotel.Perez from United States – 15 June 2023 (7/10)
It had resturants near by
What could be improved: No a.c. and little privacyMelissa from United States – 9 March 2023 (7/10)
super cute, very clean, in an awesome location 🙂
What could be improved: one of the noisiest hotels we’ve ever stayed at. it’s an echo chamber and if other guests aren’t considerate it’s loud. it is probably less loud usually, I think we had an unlucky timing with a group staying there.Pamela from United States – 2 March 2023 (8/10)
Location was excellent – close to park and lots of food options. Interesting neighborhood to walk around in.
What could be improved: No place to hang clothes in room!
Noise from neighboring rooms bothered my husband during the night.Filip from Luxembourg – 7 November 2022 (9/10)
good value for the money
What could be improved: nothing , all okJakub from Czech Republic – 5 November 2022 (7/10)
The location was very good (close to metrobús and metro, the neighbourhood is also nice and safe) and the hotel is relatively close to the Estación del Norte. Rooms are cleaned daily. And obviously the price is unbeatable in CDMX.
What could be improved: I stayed here 2 years ago and was given a really nice room on the first floor (the one on the photos I guess). However this time we stayed in a room on the ground level and the comfort in this room was much lower. The room and the bed were smaller and the room smelled a bit moldy. But we arrived the day before the Día de los Muertos and the hotel was fully booked, so maybe this room isn't used usually.Luis from United States – 22 September 2022 (7/10)
The location
What could be improved: This is not a Hotel, it is a Motel, misleading information about the facility. There is no lobby!
