Hotel Templo Mayor Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel Templo Mayor on Calle del Carmen, you immediately get that “hidden gem” feeling — it’s tucked right into the heart of Mexico City’s historic center, but somehow feels like a secret only locals know about. The building itself has this understated charm that fits perfectly with the colonial architecture surrounding it. I mean, you’re literally steps away from some of the most important archaeological sites in the Americas, which is pretty incredible when you think about it.
Location Magic
Honestly, the location is what makes this three-star hotel punch way above its weight class. You can walk to the Zócalo in about three minutes, and the actual Templo Mayor ruins are so close you could probably hit them with a paper airplane from your window. What I love is that couples seem to really get it — they consistently rate the location over 8 out of 10, and I totally understand why. There’s something romantic about wandering these cobblestone streets at night, then ducking back into your cozy base.
The Room Experience
The rooms aren’t going to blow you away with fancy amenities, but they’re clean, comfortable, and have this authentic Mexican charm that feels genuine rather than touristy. You know what I appreciate? The windows actually open, so you can hear the city waking up in the morning — church bells, street vendors, that whole beautiful chaos that is Centro Histórico. The beds are solid, the bathrooms work well, and honestly, when you’re spending most of your time exploring one of the world’s great historic neighborhoods, that’s really all you need in a room.
Neighborhood Vibes
Centro Histórico can be intense — it’s busy, sometimes gritty, definitely authentic. But that’s exactly why staying here works so well. You’re not in some sanitized hotel zone; you’re actually living in the city for a few days. The restaurant scene around here is incredible, from tiny taquerías that have been family-run for generations to more upscale spots in converted colonial mansions. I’d suggest asking the front desk for their recommendations — they know which places are worth the walk and which tourist traps to avoid.
Why Guests Love It
Recent guests keep rating this place at 8.5 for location, and after staying here, I get it completely. It’s not about having the fanciest lobby or the most Instagram-worthy pool — it’s about being exactly where you want to be in Mexico City. You can walk to the cathedral, the National Palace, amazing museums, and some of the best street food in the city without ever needing transportation. The staff genuinely seems to care about helping you navigate the neighborhood, which makes a huge difference when you’re trying to experience the real Mexico City rather than just checking boxes on a tourist itinerary.
Hotels near me in Mexico deliver quick metro rides to Chapultepec forests, mariachi plazas, and sunrise balloons over Teotihuacan.

The location couldn't be better, staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful, abd the terrace is pretty nice!
What could be improved: Well, the room was pretty basic as can be seen in the pictures. It's pretty large though.Dolores from United States – 11 February 2025 (9/10)
Rosie and all the staff were very kind. My daughter had medicine, and they kept it in their fridge.
They checked us in and let us leave our luggage so that we could start on our adventures early!
Having 2 restrooms was perfect! My daughter loved the kids' room. The tile in the restrooms was cute.
They came in and cleaned the room daily.Aoife from Ireland – 6 January 2025 (9/10)

What could be improved: Very hot rooms, even with fanApril from China – 21 June 2023 (8/10)
The room is clean and comfortable. It's location is also good, not far from the airport and we can walk around the historic center. The staff is kind to help us for different requirments.
What could be improved: I don't like the photo on the wall with piles of skulls on it. It makes me a little uncomfortable. And the window and the water tap is not so convenient to use.Samuel from New Zealand – 6 May 2023 (9/10)
The staff were fantastic. They were able to help us with everything we needed even with our very limited Spanish. The location is very close to the main attractions.
What could be improved: The only challenging aspect was that it is in a very busy location which was hard to navigate at times.
